social
Sultry, mature, aged over the years, numb to relations of the social kind, bored with living but it's too much to find a way to end it. Being as old as he is, Bai Yi has developed a rather withdrawn and detached personality, finding no real means of needing to connect himself to anyone, anything or into any situation. Like the rain he falls where he may and trickles away when he feels like it. His reserved and calculated attitude makes him seem cold and rather uninterested to some. The lack of speaking or communication during conversation or social situations often paints a picture that he feels himself above others in the room when in reality, most times, he just prefers to listen. Bai Yi has a personality that either people like or they don’t, connect with or don’t, he does not mold for anyone’s comfort or to make anyone like him. If you don’t you don’t, if you do you do, he could care less either way. Being as he is when he does talk, Bai Yi prefers deep conversation over small talk, often finding small talk rather awkward and boring; often removing himself from it or tuning it out by sinking into his thoughts. When you do get to know and understand Bai Yi you will find he is smart, kind, gentle, elegant and comfortable to be around, resembling the feeling of laying by a soft stream on a cloudy day.

His voice is very airy, whispered, a soft breath of words aged like smooth fine wine. The last time he had sex, it was very intimate, very deep, with someone he loved very much; a companion he had been with for a while and was going to spend his millennium with. They were drunk on rice wine and he was out of it, still learning his abilities and his powers. Didn't know he could use ice, and in the middle of doing it his emotions got away from him and he froze his lover to death. He won't drink and he won't have penetrative sex again. He watched the ice cover him and couldn't do anything, he didn't know how to stop it. Just screamed as he watched him become frozen solid in front of him. Wears custom made black velvet gloves, form fitted as if sewn on his hands out of fear of freezing someone again. Can play the guzheng as if it was made by him physical contact is something he avoided due to his past, even a simple brush of his cheek is enough to make him flinch.

lore.

Prologue
10,000 years ago the final remnants of the last glacial period gave birth to a grand and powerful dragon, one of ice and frost, depicted in early Chinese history as one of the three great dragon kings of the east. Bai Long (白龙). Upon his birth, a blizzard blanketed the earth and for seven days the sun could not kiss the soil until the last shreds of ice finally melted, it was the end of the last glacial maximum. Soon he would see the world in all its greenery and meet all of its creatures as they flourish. Bai Long became a relic to the newly developed civil world, a deity, almost a god, that gave them bountiful harvests and wealth; even some speculated he was responsible for the rain even if there was no evidence of it. For many years, Bai Long sat atop Mount. Yulong, his home, his birthplace, watching the centuries go by and the world evolve. Every so often, to see and understand the differences from one decade to the last, Bai Long would venture down and bribe a human with treasures to learn of what changed and what stayed from the previous times.

Although he was proud, powerful, and stronger than most beings, he was not born with remotely as much prejudice as his fellow dragons. It was fascinating, especially after being alone so often, watching the humans flitter around new ideas, but also refreshing to see when something was not broken it need not be fixed. Atop his mountain the mighty dragon reigned superior and grand, until one moment he no longer was. It spread fast that a fellow dragon had not only angered but betrayed a rather spiteful dark witch, causing so much pain to her heart she cursed all dragons for the fault of one. Yes, most dragons were greedy, self-absorbed, righteous, prideful creatures, but it felt unfair to him that the faults of a few condemned the entirety. It took centuries to get used to being in such a different form, but really Bai Long over time accepted it as fate giving himself the surname Xue (雪). Around the Shang Dynasty (1600 BCE - 1046 BCE), the first imperial dynasty of China’s recorded history, was when the rather lonely dragon laid eyes on the most beautiful person he had ever seen. Their hair was long and thick, black as ink and as soft as silk, the way they danced kept the dragon's gaze cast only to them, stealing every ounce of his attention away.

It was the moment their eyes met he knew he wanted them, the person who he thought at the time was a woman stared back at him with azure eyes as deep as the Northern sea. Their very presence was like none before, an allure of desire and elegance pushing palpitations to the forefront of Bai Long’s heart. At first, all he wanted was to keep the beautiful being as a treasure, but over time that feeling of collection shifted and manifested into something more than just wishing to keep them. The more Bai Long had come to know the other-worldly dancer, the deeper his affection for him grew. Jiang Qing Shui (江清水), an ethereal man he soon learned to be that of noble Undine status, had not only caught the attention of a beast but also his heart, and tamed it. For once, he felt there was something he did not want to just possess but to care for and protect. For the next few decades the two spent time knowing each other, learning from one another and developing an almost fairytale-like love for one another that would later inspire a legend that would in turn spark many fantasy writings. The mountain dragon and the blue spring fairy, creatures thought to be myth, a made-up romance of the ages, but they were very very real.

Bai Long and Qing Shui were inseparable, weaved into each other like twisted tangled yarn, never wishing for the knots to be undone. Decades of love, untamed and unmatched lead to their wish to start a family much to the excitement of Qing Shui’s sylph and undine family. But the test of conceiving was hard in this day and age for anyone, especially supernatural beings of the same sex. Witches and potions were summoned and made, countless tricks and trials performed but either nothing stuck or when it did their life was not long. 800 years of loss scattered through its time, of wishing and hoping to have a child of their own only for it to fall through their fingers. With their hearts broken and their will all but run out, finally a miracle came forth. At the start of the Qin Dynasty (221 BCE - 206 BCE) the two lovers were blessed with a beautiful child, a boy they named Xue Bai Yi (雪白乙), born with brilliant deep blue eyes and white hair. Because he was the first and only child they could seem to conceive, they doted on him more than any treasure his father had possessed in his past, protected him almost too much and showered him with endless love.

Xue Bai Yi had came out an undine with potential unknown to himself at the time, his features inherited from his family casting him into a rather ethereal light alongside his mother yet intimidating like his father. With sharp eyes, full lips and mysterious intent, his mother's side of the family joked about him being a fox demon switched at birth. His attitude stemmed from being raised by ancient beings and nobility making him rather thirsty to learn, mature and at one point, too curious. This curiosity was the one aspect of the usually proper child's past that resulted in his first taste of reality. His mother's family consisted of undine and sylph making some appear with white hair, his father also harboring this trait and thus it was no surprise he inherited it. Bai Yi was quick to learn of his abilities, taking lessons with his mother or uncle on how to control it until it was so natural there was no need for him to be taught any further. Though his grandfather thought differently, teaching the child defense and attack at a young age due to the dangerous conditions this dynasty held outside their walls. Constantly he asked why he needed to learn this, why he had to exert himself so much for a maybe or what if’s.

The little Bai Yi would pout and sit on the ground in protest, wanting nothing more than to play or read. His grandmother had to convince him why it was important, that this was a time long before the understanding of the modern world, long before acceptance for differences existed, where fear of the unknown and fairy tales of demonic man-eating creatures were created when something was not could not be explained. Xue Bai Yi had thought the scary story his grandmother would tell him was just that, a story meant to scare him into behaving. She told of so-called “demon hunters” with the possession of magical objects that had massacred many of her friends and family long ago, how they were hunted like deer for their hair being white and decapitated; their heads displayed for everyone to see. She explained why it was the reason she and others in their family used special ink to dye their hair black, so they could be safe, and soon he would too when he was older. The story had always lingered in Bai Yi’s mind as a little warning, but he was so curious about what was beyond the stone walls and red gates of their home… Wondered why he couldn’t just leave with mother to go to the markets.

Bai Yi felt it silly that something as simple as a different hair color could produce so much fear that a special group was made determined to eradicate its existence. It was this mindset that combined rather foolishly with his curiosity that would entice him over the wall, into the market, and chased viciously. His father had not killed anyone for so long until that night. His mother had not worried that much for so long ‘til that night, and no one in his family had ever had their hair dyed at his age ‘til that night. At the age of 9, Xue Bai Yi learned that they were outcasts, feared and hated by humans. If you looked even remotely different from them, that they were willing to throw rotten vegetables, tea cups, bowls, rocks and other things at a child just for a different hair color they dubbed demonic. His grandmother slowly dyed his hair while hushing the poor child, telling him the reason they waited until the age of 13 to dye a child born with white hair was because the potions they use on shift their eyes to a normal color was too strong and bitter. Since then, for a few hundred years, Bai Yi refused to venture out to the market beyond the walls, finding that his curious nature had died down significantly with the incident. A scar on his pale forehead, a reminder of that day and the result of too much curiosity, altering his personality into who he was now.

Later in life at the age of 562, Bai Yi had developed into someone that preferred solitude over crowded rooms, introverted with books shoved in his face, mature and quiet with a lace of elegance in the way he carried himself. Though this did not mean he did not have his fun, in fact, the one thing the undine loved most was learning and mastering whatever was popular during the time period. No matter how crowded, loud, smelly or odd a place was, if he needed to go there to learn a new skill he would without hesitation. This resulted in him being talented in more things than anyone could keep count of: sword dance, Chinese traditional dance, weiqi, gambling in various means, guzheng, crafting, carving, cooking, marketing, business and many many many more. One hobby and talent in particular became a big part of his life and who he was, rice wine making and collecting. Learning and collecting various wines from around the world, tasting them, experiencing the different profiles and notes, finding that no two wines were the same, it was rather thrilling. It was also the thing that led him to the first person he had ever felt a pull to, a yearning, a love, that sparked that rather dangerous curiosity and erupted the string of endless tragedies to come.
End Prologue

The start of the Ming Dynasty (1368 AD - 1644 AD)The chill kissed breeze was filled with the faint sweet notes carried from the peach blossom tree above, pink flowers blooming for the final moments of its season. The warmth of the day slowly gave way to the lower temperatures of the coming cold seasons, urging the last foliage of spring to shine a final moment.Soft petals from the tree danced one by one, fluttering gracefully to the ground and scattered around the figure that lay below. Bai Yi had fallen fast asleep only moments ago, a book by his hand, a fresh bottle of pear pearl wine lay beside him drunk with a gentle smile of determination. He looked like a fairy among the shrubbery, inky hair cascading between sage colored steams like dark streams."Yu'er⋆? Yu’er? Where are you my dear child?" The familiar gentle chime of his mother's melodic voice carried like morning bells to his ears, causing a light stir to his dreams, his body shifting softly against the grass, pulled from the world of fantasy to reality. Rising slowly, the cascade of hair that rested in the grass slipped over his shoulder painting a picture akin to that of a shrine portrait portraying a water goddess, a delicate disposition.

“Niang⋆. I am here.” The husky whisper of his tone was faint but carried enough weight for his mother to find him, her smile a breath of refreshing air pushing his lips to mirror the action as if they could not help it. “Is everything alright?” Pale blue robes spilled like water around Bai Yi as he stood, creepy across the ground in wisps with every step that carried him towards his mother where he stood waiting. The smile on the man's face increased, a delicate hand reaching towards his son pulling petals from the long strands of his hair and discarding those that stuck in the delicate silver ornaments decorating his head.“Mm, everything is alright. I just wanted to inform you that the shipment of various wines you requested has arrived. I know you like to be there to insure all is accounted for, also your jiu fu⋆ has arrived. Be sure to greet him properly, alright?” Bai Yi stood in contentment listening carefully to what his mother said, like each syllable was precious; because in his eyes, this voice was the most soothing sound in the world. “Thank you niang, I will be sure to greet jiu fu after going through the shipment. Have you taken your medicine?” For a while longer, they spoke under the weeping peach tree, an enchanting backdrop creating a serene moment between a mother and his son.

Bai Yi took his time wandering through the quiet courtyard to the front gate, counting each of the deep grey stone tiles sitting stiff beneath his feet in ornate patterns on the way. His mind drifted for a moment, his steps slowing even further than they already were while the undine pondered various things. Distracted by his mind, his body collided with another, a bottle of wine slipping from the stranger’s hands rushing quickly to the hard ground below.Through natural instinct, his pale hands rushed rapidly towards the porcelain container, its light cream-colored body decorated with intricate green vines and blue flowers telling Bai Yi it was a rather expensive bottle. As his impulse moved him toward his precious alcohol, the hands of the stranger rushed towards him, the undine’s concentration so deep set on saving the priceless wine he had disregarded his own safety. It happened in a blur of calculated movements, the wine securely rescued from its shattering fate by the hands of Bai Yi and his own self recovered from what could have been a devastating fall by the strangers. The breath locked inside his lungs thinking he would not catch the bottle finally released, voicing the relief he felt that it had been saved following the faintest of satisfied smiles.

The chuckle rumbling from the chest pressed against his shoulder where he was held was what made Bai Yi aware of the moment in its entirety. There, in the front courtyard by the gate to his home, the undine lay half propped in the arms of a man he did not know, his gaze lifting from the wine gourd to the stranger that looked down at him.Their eyes locked, dazed, as they stared at each other like the rest of the world was no longer present. Those eyes that looked into him a little too deep were the color of obsidian, shimmered with a mischievous glint that made the soft smirk on his face appear a little more mysterious than he felt it was intended.“Is the alcohol really that important to you?” Of course it was, it was the one thing he could use to experience the different preferences and abilities of the vast and ever-changing world.“Yes.” Bai Yi breathed out, resulting in another laugh from the man who still had him in his arms, the tilt of his head doing more than the undine would ever confess out loud to his heart. “You may let me up now, I am no longer falling.”

As if the stranger had been preparing his whole life to express the next words that tumbled from his mouth, they spilled out without hesitation, making Bai Yi’s face turn an unnatural shade of pink for the usually composed man. “I might be.”The smile the man gave him erupted every ounce of embarrassment the undine had failed to experience in his 1,117 years of life, his heart rushing in his chest, causing him to shove away from the stranger's heated grasp.“Pardon?!” Bai Yi bellowed quietly, breathless and unamused. The flush adding pink to jade white cheeks crept like ivy to the tips of his ears, the hand free of holding onto his dear wine busying itself fixing robes that were by no means out of place, he just needed a distraction.“I meant you were heavy, I almost fell trying to keep you upright.” Again, that smile like a thousand sunbeams shooting through the trees blinded the undine, stunning Bai Yi where he stood and delaying his reaction to the rather unexpected response.

“You!” Biting at his lip, Bai Yi took in a breath, releasing it with a soft ’tch’ narrowing his eyes towards the snarky male with indifference. He wished from here forth to have nothing to do with him again, turning his head away with a glint of frustration in his step. The way he had been humiliated was carried like a heavy stone on his shoulders, so obviously his uncle observed him with a look of concern and confusion when Bai Yi greeted him. For weeks, the smile that lit brighter than the sun burned in the undine’s mind, distracting him from the things that used to be easy for him to become lost in. That he found peace in doing. The undine stalked to the gate with a frown pulling down the corner of his pink lips, brow furrowed in deep thought completely perplexed about the way his mind had been as of late. The man from before, Zhou Yang Ran (周阳冉), had been absent in the last 2 months of deliveries, stirring something unknown in his heart. Bai Yi could not decipher if the delivery man from before was a nightmare or a dream, that deceitful smile both disturbed and excited something inside him that the undine did not feel like himself.

Even his parents noticed something off about their child, pointing out the various mistakes he usually never made. Grace turned clumsy, concentrated turned distracted, refined turned blemished. The blizzard in his garden had been burned ever so slightly by the brightest of lights, and Bai Yi was baffled how he felt about it. The pacing of the undine in front of the gate waiting for the delivery for that month was close to carving a trench, pale blue shoes embroidered with white rabbits tapping against the ground with growing vexation. What if he was not at this delivery either?“Keep that up, and you’ll lose enough weight to be comfortable to carry, lu zhou⋆.” Yang Ran spoke sweetly, a strong stature propped against the open gate with arms crossed over his broad chest. The sudden voice startled the pacing undine, wiping around with a flutter of soft pale blue robes and long half up locks. The sudden movement triggered the little bells decorating Bai Yi’s hair on thin chains, the sound soft and subtle, producing a whimsical atmosphere every time the undine moved even the slightest.“L-Luzhou?!” The expression on his face reflected shocked bewilderment at such a nickname. ’Pork stew? Did he just call me pork stew?’

Bai Yi was too stunned to move, to speak, trying what he could to process the reason this man liked to tease him so greatly. It was only their second meeting and again Yang Ran had annoyed and humiliated him into expressing emotions that he usually never exaggerated this much. The edges of his cheeks burned a deep shade of red, stark in contrast to the pale surface of his skin. “Why must you tease me so?”Again there it was, the smile that reflected that of a thousand suns, erupting along with it a laugh that paralleled the way a warm hug made you feel on a cold day. Bai Yi couldn’t understand the mixture of raw emotions brewing in his chest, both bitterly irate and captivated at the same time. Yang Ran came closer, each step in itself a mischievous fleet that told nothing of his intentions once he arrived at his destination.Right in front of Bai Yi. Standing tall before him, the undine had not noticed his height before, not at all as tall as his father but definitely towered himself and his mother. His hands were held behind his back as if to hide every secret in this world just out of reach, giving the man a rather sturdy appearance as he bent down close to Bai Yi’s grounded form. “You look rather lovely today, I couldn’t get a good look at you before. The nickname lu zhou suits you.”

Bai Yi was again stunned, his tongue paralyzed. Yang Ran was too close, far too close, the undine straining to lean back just enough to give distance, but had no desire to run away due to his prideful nature. He would not back down just because of a strong resolve and a handsome face. “Suits…suits me?!” Never in his 700 years had he ever felt so insulted, thinking the man was calling him pork stew again, and insisting it fit perfectly. There was nothing on this earth that was going to save this man now. Bai Yi was ready to attack, soft lips parting, his throat filling with a variety of curses he was ready to spew like a white rapid waterfall. The first word bubbling up the muscle of the undine’s esophagus sprouting petals on his tongue, ready to bloom without restraint only to be plucked early by its roots. Before he could say anything, Yang Ran removed his hands from their hiding place behind his broad back, displaying what he had hidden in them with a smile spread excitedly across his face.A bottle of ’Morning Dew and Great Heaven’, one of the finest and rarest wines ever produced, was held firmly in one hand and in the other a small bouquet of snowdrops and blue orchids. “I got these, for you” The smile he wore now held a hint of shyness, of reserved feelings, of nervousness.

For a little longer than he would like to admit, Bai Yi stood frozen staring at the gifts presented to him like this was not real, like this moment was another one of his dreams. The silence was so loud, so deafening, so thick you could cut it with a knife and have it on bread. The nerves in Yang Ran’s eyes grew the longer the undine sat frozen in response, prompting the young man to further explain, to try what he could and gain some sort of reaction. “Um. The reason I brought this was because I…”The pause added to the silence for a moment. “Uh. I looked back at all the wine you have had delivered to you is unique. I can tell you are passionate and respectful in understanding the delicate and artistic nature of how they are made. My father used to be a winemaker, he taught me the significance of wine and how no two are ever alike. The process, the compassion, and the time that goes into making it. I can tell that you appreciate it. The flowers just reminded me of your eyes.”Deep pools stared still at the gifts for moments more, processing them, feeling them, taking in the explanation as to why the man would bring them.

Slowly, delicate hands lifted to the bottle of wine, tracing the beautifully carved bottle fixed with golden flowers and silver wisps. It was stunning, the craftsmanship reflecting the perfection that it held. Both hands held each gift in one but did not take them from Yang Ran’s hands right away.Bai Yi cast his gaze from the wine and flowers to the man’s own, falling into their dark depths just like the day they had met. “Are they really for me?”His gaze cast back to them, delicate in the way they continued to trace the two offerings in disbelief that he was being given such precious things. Remembering only then that he had been gone for two months before, was it to find these? Why would he go so far for someone he barely knew? “You were gone…”“Mm. I wanted to have something to give you the next time we met. I did not want to appear before you again empty-handed, so I brewed you my father's signature wine knowing someone like you would appreciate it and spent the two months it took to brew this little amount to find the perfect flowers that reminded me of the way your eyes made me feel.”Bai Yi was at a loss for words, was just lost. The man in front of him was melting him inside with his very presence, gifting him things that were perfect preferences to his taste as if they had known each other for a long time.

Tied with a beautiful blue ribbon a card sat with the words To Lu Zhu written in perfect penmanship on it. “Dewdrop?” Now the undine was more embarrassed than they had been when they first met.Bai Yi immediately covered his face prompting a small voice of concern from Yang Ran only for his explanation to cause the man to laugh so wholeheartedly the birds in the trees startled. All this time he thought the man had been calling him pork stew, when he had been calling him dewdrop.Just like that, the prideful, frozen, reserved and cautious Bai Yi was melted by the bright warm sun.Since that day, Yang Ran brought many things to Bai Yi with every delivery, courting the undine with treasures only he knew he would appreciate from all corners of the world. At some point, the deliveries stopped being an excuse to show up, and he just would. With flowers in one hand and an exotic wine in the other, they became so deeply infatuated with each other, there was little room for anyone else. His mother and father found it exciting that their son had found someone who brought a more lively side of him, his father often intimidating Yang Ran with questions of sincerity.

Three years passed between now and then, their love grew with immense vigor rooting itself with thick deep vines that coiled their hearts into the base of a grand oak tree to live forever as they wished to. Engaged, happy, content.“Are you really sure you want to marry him? He is a gnome, a land creature, we are water and ice, it just makes no sense.” His uncle, Jiang Hei Shui (江黑水), spoke up as he paced behind Bai Yi at an uncomfortably close distance, the tone of his voice unnaturally panicked. The undine always felt that his uncle was an interesting and rather strange man. He always lingered too much, stared too openly, hugged too long and had an opinion about everything Bai Yi was associated with. He never questioned it because others reassured it was just this way of expressing love and care.“Mm, I am sure. I don’t mind what he is, I feel safe and happy with him. The wedding isn’t for a few days anyway, so don’t be so frantic now jiu fu, save it for when it’s time.” Bai Yi’s smile bloomed as vibrant and vast, the expression rather permanent these last few days ever since Yang Ran has proposed.

The pin in his hair was his engagement gift, intricately carved by his lover himself out of beautiful jade decorated with gold chains that held blue gems and silver chimes. Hei Shui had been staring at it with a hint of disapproval that masked his jealousy, blanketing it with the excuse of a protective uncle when really he wanted Bai Yi for himself.“But why so close to your birthday? Why not wait for a more appropriate time and really think about it? Besides, why would he propose to you with such a cheap looking hairpin, some wine and some mediocre flowers? My nephew deserves grand things!” Hei Shui thought internally that only he could give the younger undine those things, but he did not voice that out loud.“Why not? I don’t need to think about such things, it’s beautiful to me. The things he gave me and the timing. Zhou’er⋆ knows me well, he got me things I really love and that means more to me than grand jewels or money.” His smile’s vibrancy wilted into a nostalgic contentment, the feeling like the early frost of morning in the early starts of spring. “I love him.”

The sigh that spilled from his uncle’s lips was as heavy as cold molasses, thick and sticking to the edges of his throat, feeling coated in disapproval, but the smile that followed was warm with concern and understanding. At least it came off that way on the outside. His uncle stood tall, not as tall as his father or mother but a little more than him, walking with an eerie grace that mirrored the way ink poured into fresh water. Hei Shui sat practically pressed against Bai Yi’s side, a cold hand curling into the pale expanse of his own, patting it with the other.Three good pats echoed gently into the large, quiet room before anyone spoke. “I see, there is no changing your mind. I am happy you have found someone to love this much.” Hei Shui’s eyes were cast to the hand he held rubbed idly by his thumb, thinking of all the ways he could tie them up to keep Bai Yi locked away from everyone else.He reached into the fold of his dark blue robe against his chest, pulling a relatively decent sized box from within, and presented it to the young undine. “Then this is my gift to you. It is a very special wine made from the glaciers high up north and rested for 3 days before being brewed in a sacred cave for three years. It's cold, rich, and sweet. Or so I have heard."

His uncle took another breath. "I know how much you love your wine. But this is for you, that devil snatching my nephew away can go find his own since he is so good at it.”It felt comforting the way Hei Shui spoke to him with a playful pout in his tone. The man was so good at being fake, there was no telling what was genuine and what was deceit. Bai Yi’s smile spread back onto his face, tracing the ornate carvings in the box's dark wood before opening it, his eyes going wide at the sight. The bottle was beautiful, its swirled frosted blue glass that twisted up into intricate bands resembled the appearance of ice.The sweet and refreshing scent of the wine that had settled in the box had Bai Yi’s eyes fluttering closed for a moment as he took it in. “Mmm, a magnificent wine. Thank you, jiu fu. It's the perfect gift.”“Anything for you, my dear nephew.” It was in this moment of Bai Yi’s distraction that Hei Shui had run a hand over the young undine’s hair, snagged a lock of it, and pressed it to his nose. Inhaling shamelessly. “Anything for you.”The wedding was magnificent. His mother and father went above what was ever expected, making the day magical for the two newlyweds.

The banquet was filled with joy and laughter, drinks and food shared among the guests that left gifts. Bai Yi found it both endearing and overwhelming the amount of emotions in the room directed to them. A few tears from his mother was an expected scene, his eyes welling with pretty crystal like droplets, but much to Bai Yi’s surprise he saw his father tear up too. The sight warmed something in his heart, the undine was unable to hold back his own emotions, seeing someone usually so proud and put together cry.Yang Ran dealt with the guests, much to the relief of the rather introverted Bai Yi. He naturally integrated into the crowd as if he had known everyone there for years. It was hard not to like someone like the gnome though, so grounded and down to earth in more than just a literal sense. It was no wonder he gave off the warmth of the sun.Bai Yi felt a hand press lightly to his sleeve, the red bridegroom robes cascading to the floor, dragging gracefully as he twisted his form to face his mother. “Yu’er, your father and myself have a gift for you and your lover. Will you follow?” The undine smiled softly, nodding his head, and wandered off to remove Yang Ran from the group of scholars he had piqued the interest of, pulling him to where his mother and father stood in order to follow them.

His hand was wrapping around his mother's arm for one last gesture to the way he would cling to him as a child, talking softly to each other about the wedding and how it went. Behind them Bai Yi’s father and love, two intimidating figures walking with their arms crossed, speaking of what Yang Ran plans to do in the future. The walk was not long, guiding them through the garden towards the back mountain of their home.Their steps light with no indication of a rush, it felt like his mother and father wanted one more walk with him as their child before he was forever a wife. The air was cold against his nose and cheeks, snow fell around them lightly blanking the earth and lying it to sleep. The journey was comfortable, the laughter of his father and lover calming the nerves set deep in Bai Yi’s thoughts that this would end up breaking them apart with what Yang Ran was. It made him happy, this made him happy. In the clearing around the bend, the breeze slipped like gentle fingers through his long hair, bellowing the red robes out and behind him.Snow pressed to cold flushed porcelain cheeks and clouded Bai Yi’s eyes for a moment, making them flutter to be able to see. When his vision cleared and the swell of snow relaxed with the wind, a beautiful home sat wrapped with red wedding decorations in the distance. “Niang? Die⋆?”

His father was the one that came up behind the undine and lightly pressed his hand to the base of his shoulder, Bai Yi twisting with a look of shocked confusion on his brow. “This is our wedding gift to you, I had it commissioned a few years ago for your coming of age, but I think it fits much better for this.” His father's voice was always deep, like a ravine filled with soft snow and blue ice. That did not mean it was cold in tone but rather clear and rich, it felt like a blanket, oddly, wrapped around you in winter with your feet peeking out.The tears that slipped down his cheeks were hot paving trails of warmth against the cold, it was beautiful and he could hardly comprehend how he felt. Bai Yi hugged his father deeply, moving quickly to his mother's open arms, who was chuckling gently seeing his child so much more emotional than usual.Yang Ran laughed softly, practically turning the gentle winter around them into spring with one sound, taking Bai Yi into his arms after knowing he would need grounding. “Thank you, it's beautiful and perfect. We accept this gift wholeheartedly, myself and Bai Yi, accept it.”The tour of the home pointed out every detail that went into it, showing that his father and mother knew him and his style so well.

There was a large peach tree by a pond and in the pond two koi, one white and one blue, gifted for luck and prosperity. A shed in the back was filled neatly with all his wine he had collected. It was a perfect parting gift.Their final goodbye with Bai Yi as their child was filled with happiness and sorrows, the embrace of the family lingering for what felt like a season or more. One could feel the reluctance in their departure, but it was only natural. They would see each other on a regular basis. This was just how it was then when your child moved from the main house into their own.Yang Ran melted all the snow, all the cold, all the heavy sadness and nerves he felt in a single smile when Bai Yi finally returned to his arms and followed him into their new home. It was time to consummate the marriage, to become husband and wife through the intimate unraveling of flesh against flesh. The tension between them was thicker than the fog at the peak of the mountain, floating around them with temptation to surpass the ceremony of sharing wine and slip right into the sheets of their bed.

“I have a special wine we can share for the ceremony. My jiu fu gifted it to me on the day before our wedding, and I know you will be just as appreciative of it as I am.” Pulling the box from his robes with a gentle movement, the hard, dark and intricately decorated surface shone slightly in the candlelight.Bai Yi opened the box, sitting at the table beside the bed and removed the beautiful bottle from its confines, placing it lightly on the table. The bottle itself felt cold to the touch, the fresh scent of sweet dew rising from its surface, enticing them both to sit and share a drink. The wine was more delicious than he had expected, sharing it between them instead of keeping it to himself as his uncle teased would have been a small regret for younger Bai Yi; he was so happy he did. With their wine shared, the ceremony had been set and now there was no need for them to hesitate embracing each other. Robes fell without any grace of their previous form following, piles of expensive fabrics tossed without care to the floor. They only cared about the need, about the craving for each other that had eaten away at their restraint for so long.

Yang Ran pulled Bai Yi’s slim naked form onto his lap, staring up into his beautiful deep blue eyes with a newfound love blooming like a bouquet in his chest. His hand lifted slowly, his gaze freezing the undine in place with its intensity, pulling the blue ribbon he had worn in his hair since the day he had given it to him wrapped around the flowers that past day. Inky black locks fell in streams over his shoulders, sharply contrasting their milky surface, and the gnome was consumed. They spent their first time together feeling every particle of the other. At some point in the middle of their heated connection, barely contained, their energy draining slowly, Yang Ran had slipped a hand carved jade bracelet onto his wrist before kissing it. “I carved this for you, just for you. I hope you will wear it always, and think of me when I am away.”Bai Yi shifted his wrist in the light of the candles, watching the pretty carvings catch every detail of it. For a moment longer they continued their embrace without any thought of the world around them. It was only them, they were happy, the day was perfect, nothing could go wrong.Until it did.

Laying together, sweat wrapped, the bed and their bodies thoroughly damp, kissing with a deep need even after their lustful embrace had ended. They could not let go of each other.Yang Ran laid sturdy between Bai Yi’s legs, touching every part of him he could with his free hand while the other lay tangled in the strands of his sweat slicked hair supporting his head. Their tongues danced, teeth lightly clashed, hands roamed and squeezed with pleasure and desire. They did not wish to part.Bai Yi felt a little off, his body kept shivering, trembling almost violently, teeth rattling in their erratic kiss, but he just chalked it up to how absolutely intense the situation made him feel. It was overwhelming, he was covered in sweat, it was cold outside and somewhere there must have been a breeze to make him feel such a freeze in his depth where Yang Ran was not touching. If he had opened his eyes, he would have noticed that his breath was visible. If he had opened his eyes, he would have noticed the tips of his fingers start to turn the sweat slipping down his lover's shoulder to ice. If he had opened his eyes, he would have realized something was actually wrong before it was too late.

A sudden and violent surge of freezing cold energy painfully flowed from his gut, rushing up his chest and into his arms at an alarming speed, before feeling as if it exploded out of him.Everything happened so quickly all he could do was watch and then scream, scream so loud, Bai Yi felt as if his vocal cords would shatter at the volume of which his voice escaped. Yang Ran was consumed with ice at a rate he could not comprehend, his dark eyes frozen wide with confusion, pain and uncertainty, leaving that as the last expression on his face.Bai Yi’s body hurt so much, he could not control what was happening to him. verything he touched froze over as soon as his hand lay against its surface. The bed froze as he pressed upward rapidly, the undine unable to breathe louder as he reached for Yang Ran.His hand trembled, unsure, frightened to touch the stone-cold face staring in horror in front of him. When it finally pressed to the frozen expanse of the man’s cheek, Bai Yi’s heart shattered, finding the warmth it once held stiff and solid. He was dead and he had killed him. “No! No, no, no, no no! Yang Ran!?”

“Yang Ran? Please, my love.. Yang Ran…” Yang Ran was dead… and he had killed him. Bai Yi knew undines could use ice, his mother could on certain occasions, though it took a lot out of him when he did, but not once had he shown potential in it. Then, again, they never really tried. The tears froze to his cheeks, his hair froze where sweat clung to the strands around his face while he stared and waited for any sign that he was still alive. The sounds that came from him were close to animalistic as he cried, the undine trying everything to get him to move or wake up until he realized he wouldn’t. Then he just screamed until his voice was hoarse. In his head, Yang Ran couldn’t be dead, this was not death, something could be done and the only thing he could think to do was find his mother or his grandmother to help. Bai Yi pushed off the bed, slipping instantly on the ice sheet that had exploded onto the floor from the bed like a waterfall of crystals all the way to the table and cutting his hand. But he did not feel it.It was snowing harder now, the thin and pleasant blanket of snow now gave way to thick and frequent swells. His feet stung, his body trembled harder as the piercing wind bit through the thin fabric of the single inner robe he had ripped from the pile on the floor.

His purpling feet carried his shaking body with as much haste as the little energy he had back down the mountain path to the main house. Bai Yi stepped onto the cold familiar stone tiles he often counted, rushing through the back courtyard with determination to find someone to save his love. A nightmare awaited him in the inner courtyard. The snow speckled grey stones gave way to pools of scarlet, bodies lay strewn in various places laying lifeless and stained. It was a garden of massacre, the amount of blood blooming uncanny in patches like bushes of roses wherever his eyes looked. Matching the wedding ribbons almost perfectly.Panic rose with the bile in his throat, projecting into the snow nearby in a violent manner. He was already so overwhelmed, Bai Yi’s body collapsed, tired and still in so much pain. What was happening? Why was this happening? Was it a dream? He so hoped this was some messed up dream caused by the alcohol, a hallucination. Anything but reality.Slowly, with a sliver of strength left, Bai Yi mumbled for his father, his mother, his grandmother, anyone. Cousins, aunts, and servants riddled the ground with wide and frightened eyes through the path to his parents’ house, making his stomach queasy and his heart race with anxiety that no one was left.

The closer he moved, the more his steps slowed, and his mind raced with thoughts of finding his mother and father dead on the floor in pools of their blood, subjected to the same fate as everyone else.Bai Yi reached the path to his parents’ home, catching a stream of snow white hair cascading down the dark stone steps, contrasting the river of blood beside it. The pale, blood splattered face of his grandmother stared with a blank expression at him from the top of them, dead. His legs would not move, this felt so unreal. The face that smiled so fondly at him looked like a stone statue made of the finest marble, the bright eyes pale as the morning sky was dull and empty of light. She looked made of wax. Bai Yi grew heavy in his steps, feeling the weight of each reality he had faced so far starting to collapse in on him, his hands trembling, dark red from the cold, pressed against her face and the trauma of Yang Ran came back to him. Stiff and cold.Dead.Bai Yi couldn’t breathe, he could barely see through the blinding well of tears collapsing onto the stairs with no strength left to face what he could guess was beyond the grand doors of his parents’ home.

There was no amount of time or mental preparation he could do to face the reality of finding his mother and father’s lifeless bodies, not after all of the things he had already witnessed. He could not feel the snow, his body was no longer cold, he couldn’t even feel the ache in his chest and feet anymore.“Xue’er! Bai Yi!” The familiar voice suddenly echoed from the gate at the end of the path he had just come down.Bai Yi’s head shifted stiffly towards its source, seeing the frantic and worried gaze of his uncle. The fellow undine ran towards him, throwing a fur lined robe over his trembling body and rubbing at his shoulders to warm them before cupping lightly at his face.“You, You are alive! You are alive! You made it!” Tears were on his uncle’s shell-shocked eyes which avoided the body beside them with every fiber of their ability. Bai Yi couldn’t blame him, he was just happy to see someone alive and warm. “You are freezing… we have to go, we have to go now!””My parents.” He was suddenly back into the panic that the sight of his uncle alive had calmed for a moment, reaching for the man's sleeves and curling deeply into the fabric with a desperate hold. “Are they? Did they…?”

“They aren’t here, their bodies aren’t here. I looked everywhere for someone, anyone, but I couldn’t find them. They must have escaped, or were taken. But we have to go, I don’t know if the enemy is still here, and you need to be safe. Come, come xuehua*, we will find them when we are safe.” Though Bai Yi was reluctant, almost insisting, his uncle rubbed his cheek and neck to calm the anxiety, swallowing him whole, convincing him to go somewhere safe.Lifting Bai Yi to his feet, Hei Shui moved to carry him on his back, whispering for him to be careful of his fragile state with the ice on the ground.“I killed Yang Ran… My husband died because of me.” Bai Yi mumbled, the undine’s face sinking into deep sorrow then shifting into an unreadable gaze before pressing his face into the fabric of his uncle's own fur lined robes.“Do not blame yourself my xuehua… you are not at fault, you are perfect in every way and he loved you. He would not blame you. When we come back, we will bury them. But you must be safe first.” Hei Shui walked them out of the courtyard, whispering to the younger undine to keep his eyes closed as they passed bodies of their dead family members, smiling like he had won some grand prize the moment Bai Yi slipped onto his back.

They had left the scene, hid far from it until his uncle said it was safe. As soon as Bai Yi was told they could go back, he rushed to the gates, throwing them open to see what was left behind. All the bodies were gone, taken to the back courtyard and covered in white sheets, but the blood remained. The bodies of every family member were buried respectfully, their shrines erected in the ancestral hall, and Yang Ran was placed beside his grandmother's slab respectfully. Though he wanted to grieve properly, his parents’ bodies were never found, a small glimmer of hope they were alive resting like the last ray of light at sunset over his frigid heart.Bai Yi became devoted to finding them, to finding out what happened that day, why he suddenly had ice abilities he couldn’t control and who attacked. The undine wore gloves now, he kept himself wrapped in many layers and avoided any form of contact, much to his uncle's dissatisfaction. It became more and more apparent that his uncle’s rather overly protective and caring nature went beyond familial love the more he was around him. Constantly he was around, never leaving Bai Yi alone and insisting it was out of fear of the younger undine taking his own life from depression.

At some point, Hei Shui began to get uncomfortably close to him every time he was in the same room, bringing him flowers and alcohol like Yang Ran would even though he no longer drank, stealing touches of his skin that made Bai Yi jump in shock and question his intentions. At some point, months into the search for his parents, his uncle proposed the most absurd thing to him. Marriage and children, with him. The look on Bai Yi’s face was not one Hei Shui had seemed to expect, rather flustered and shocked, the disgust and disbelief twisted its beauty.Suddenly, he was trying to explain but never said it was a joke or backtracked, just tried to justify that it would fall onto them to keep their bloodline going and keep it pure. Even suggested how powerful their children would be.Bai Yi couldn’t listen anymore, shoving his chair from under him so quickly it rolled a few feet back against the floor, and he left. Taking time to try and comprehend what he just heard, the undine took a walk, a long one, circling the back mountains and into the courtyard a few times in full confusion and distress. Since that day, he avoided the man with everything he could, making excuses not to eat with him.

Even going so far as using his need to find his parents to stay away from the house completely for a few days while he figured out a way to make his uncle leave. It was the return of a seven-day search for his parents in the northern mountain clans that he was given the answer to getting rid of his uncle, the door to his home on the east side of the yard open.Bai Yi could hear the man sneering, his steps filled with anger that echoed their scorn against the wooden floors as he paced. Glass shattered in the distance, and angry words bellowed clear as day from inside the room. “Why!? Why won’t he give in to me!? I have done all of this for him! I gave him the potion to gain his ice ability! I got rid of everyone that would disapprove of us! I let him run around to try and find his parents that he will never discover! Why won’t he be mine!?"Another shattering of glass startled Bai Yi, but he continued to listen filled with shock. "What else can I do to be the only thing he sees in his life?! It's his damn parents and trying to find them, they are the one’s keeping us apart! I will have to find a way to get their bodies before he does, if he sees them dead, he will need my comfort. Then he will be mine. Only mine.”

There was nothing to prepare him for what he heard. Bai Yi stood frozen where he stood, still digesting the truth of everything that had happened that day and discovering it was his uncle’s doing. Something snapped inside him, his hands trembling, his eyes seeing red. Bursting into the room, there was little time to take in what he was doing and even less time for his uncle to react.Bai Yi shoved the doors completely open, tears stinging his eyes and anger etched deep into the curves of his expression. The shock and fear in Hei Shui’s eyes as he tried to question what was wrong with him, why he looked that way, was a blur to the younger undine as he grabbed a large shard from the broken bowl on the floor and rushed him.Bai Yi stabbed his uncle, who was too shocked to really stop him, to react against this strange burst of strength he had repeatedly. Over and over, until the glass cut deep into his hand's tendon, and he could no longer hold the glass tight enough to keep it in his grasp. Until his uncles choked on his own blood, desperately reaching for him, then went still. His uncle died that da, another scar cut into his other palm, leaving another reminder of a death by his hands.

Bai Yi let out a gentle sigh as he closed the old and fragile journal, laying a hand over its cover with a soft expression. It was one he had read over and over in hopes of finding an answer to where his parents might be, where to look, if there was a detail he missed. But no matter how many times he read this part of his past, there was never anything new, he knew that, he was just repeating insanity. It was now the end of 2024, the 21st century, and he was still looking. Slowly he rose from his chair, slipping fingers through his long hair he still couldn’t convince himself to cut short, and laid the journal back into its place on the shelf with the rest of his past.“I am still looking.. I will find you both, and bring you home.”⋆ GLOSSARY ⋆

one of the eldest children in the Jiang family, unfortunately raised by his father to feel he was superior. Was promised greatness, told he would gain all he asked and set up for failure.
was a renowned water purifier, one of the families best, until his head was poisoned by ego, greed and pride from constant praise.
was named the black water god after lake taihu was poisoned and slowly started to turn black.

Born 20,000 years ago during the hunting and gathering period, the undine was built at first with a pure heart that turned sour. His father, a rather spiteful and power hungry man, was left to raise him as his mother travelled the world. It is depicted that he used to be one of the strongest of the Jiang bloodline, able to purify such large bodies of water in short periods of time. With the purification of water many people in his early life considered him the human personification of a water god alongside his mother. Many shrines were erected inside or over any body of water seen as vital for drinking, believing that the shrines touching the water in his name would be purified by him through the stone. With his growing popularity, love, prayer and merit Hei Shui became more greedy and ego ridden to be praised and loved by the people as the most needed god. This led to his affiliation with a dark witch clan who gave him a potion to pour into his lake, a vital source of drinking water for many villages, in order to purify it and gain more merit. Unfortunately the potion was ingested by his body, not only making the lake toxic but ruining his abilities. Rumors still floaty round about the black poison the seeped from a spiteful gods hand. Since that day he has tried desperately to be adored again and find a way to fix his abilities again so the people would love him.
